Free Nationwide Screenings of Food Inc.

July 14, 2009 by pennythoughts

J and I experienced the new documentary Food Inc. a couple of weeks ago, and though I’m not through digesting it enough to share a whole lot of my thoughts here, I can’t not tell you about the Chipotle-sponsored free nationwide screenings of Food Inc happening this week.  If you haven’t yet seen this important film, or if you want to take friends or family members, please check out this link for a list of dates and locations.  Here in Houston, the free showing will be at the Angelika tomorrow night (July 15th) at 7:30 p.m.

I am so glad we saw Food Inc.  It reminded me of what I already knew, opened my eyes to new information, and gave me a major kick in the pants to keep me motivated in pursuing local and sustainable food.  Now, off to the Tuesday afternoon Rice farmers’ market!

(Huge HT to Vicki Powers of Houston on the Cheap for letting Houstonians know about this!)

It’s not showing here… but that’s probably because we don’t have Chipotle either (a grief I feel on a regular basis). Will just have to watch it on DVD eventually, I guess.

Did you see that Monsanto has a whole big spiel on their website about how they were misrepresented in the movie? Ha.

Oh, no! Double sadness. :-( J would be a very sad man without Chipotle from time to time.

Good grief, no, I hadn’t heard about Monsanto’s response. That’s kind of ironic because, if I remember correctly, they refused to be interviewed for the film. I’m sure they’re upset about the way The Omnivore’s Dilemma represented them too. Have you read that book? I’m listening to it on CD now, and it’s *very* thought-provoking and eye-opening.

I’m wondering…do you know if this has a political bend to it? By that I mean does it appeal more to one political group over another…libs or conservatives. The reason I ask is that I know folks who are staunchly one way or the other and if they view it as informaion from the OTHER side then it could be rejected on that basis alone. And the whole point is to have them receive the info.

If you have family/friends who happen to have opposing political views then you know what I mean…ha.
